Overview
Bulgaria adopted the euro in January 2026 and tightened bookmaker promotion rules in August. Yet international guides still advertise bonuses in lev and recommend offshore sites without checking a local licence.
For anyone comparing betting sites in Bulgaria, those errors matter for payments and legal access.
A licensed name is not enough: check the domain
The National Revenue Agency (NRA) supervises gambling. It publishes registers of licensed operators, authorised domains and unlicensed websites.
The whitelist was updated in September 2026. Each licence covers only the games named in its authorisation; approval for one product does not cover another.
The NRA maintains a separate blacklist and can seek the blocking of unauthorised sites. A foreign licence does not replace Bulgarian permission.
Euro deposits changed the small print
The euro replaced the lev at the fixed rate of €1 = 1.95583 BGN. The mandatory period for displaying prices in both currencies ended on 8 August 2026.
Old reviews may still quote bonuses and thresholds in BGN. Check current euro amounts and any fees.
KYC (Know Your Customer identity verification) is also important: check which documents and payment details are needed before a withdrawal.
A domestic league worth following
Bulgarian football offered a genuine surprise in May 2026. Levski Sofia won the national title for the first time in 17 years, ending Ludogorets' run of 14 consecutive championships. The decisive 1–0 win against CSKA 1948 came with four rounds remaining.
The First League, Bulgarian Cup and European qualifiers deserve attention. Compare coverage of domestic fixtures and rules for postponements and extra time.
What happens to winnings and advertising?
For Bulgarian personal-income-tax purposes, winnings from gambling licensed in Bulgaria or under the laws of another EU/EEA country are generally exempt. That tax rule should not be mistaken for permission for every EU-licensed site to accept bets in Bulgaria: market authorisation remains a separate requirement.
Gambling advertising has been heavily restricted since 2024. From 1 August 2026, affiliates promoting gambling for performance-linked commissions also require their own Bulgarian licence and may promote only locally licensed operators. That matters when a ranking promotes offshore bookmakers.
Bulgaria allows gambling only for adults aged 18 or over. The NRA also operates a Vulnerable Persons Register for people seeking exclusion from gambling; the minimum self-exclusion period is 12 months.
Questions about betting sites in Bulgaria
Are international bookmakers legal in Bulgaria?
Only if they hold the relevant Bulgarian authorisation for the service offered. Check the NRA's licensed-domain list rather than relying on a foreign licence badge.
Do Polish, German or other EU betting licences work automatically?
No. EU membership does not create one gambling licence valid across the entire Union. Bulgarian approval is still required to serve this market.
Are Bulgarian betting accounts now held in euros?
The euro is Bulgaria's official currency in 2026. Check the particular operator's account currency, current payment terms and withdrawal conditions rather than relying on pre-2026 reviews.
