Overview

On 5 October 2026, Slovakia published another update to its list of prohibited gambling offers. The register is not just a collection of offshore domains: under rules effective from January 2026, it can also cover mobile apps and the promotion of unlicensed gambling.

A sportsbook may load on your phone today and be blocked tomorrow, even if it holds a licence somewhere else.

A licence and a website are two different checks

Sports betting is legal in Slovakia under Act No. 30/2019, but operators need the appropriate Slovak authorisation. The regulator, Úrad pre reguláciu hazardných hier (ÚRHH), publishes both a register of individual licences and a list of approved gambling websites.

Check the company behind a bookmaker, the activity covered by its licence and the exact domain you intend to use. The approved-website file available in October was last updated in January 2026, while the individual-licence register had been refreshed on 11 October.

An EU or offshore licence does not automatically give a foreign operator permission to accept bets from Slovakia.

Blocking now reaches apps and payments

ÚRHH updates its prohibited-offers list on the first working day of each week. Internet providers must block listed sites, while payment service providers must prevent certain transactions to accounts connected with illegal offers. App distributors face restrictions on listed gambling applications.

In September 2026, the regulator warned that internet and mobile providers could face fines of up to €500,000 for failing to comply. It also cautions that it cannot enforce withdrawal promises or player-protection rules against unlicensed offshore operators.

Euros, winnings and a detail in the tax rules

Slovakia uses the euro. Before depositing, check whether a site supports EUR accounts, whether withdrawals must return to a payment method in your name and what identification it requires. KYC (Know Your Customer identity verification) may involve personal documents.

Slovak tax authorities say winnings from legally authorised betting and similar games are fully exempt from personal income tax. Equivalent qualifying winnings from abroad can also fall within the exemption. The separate €350 allowance for competition prizes should not be confused with sportsbook winnings.

Local football is only half the picture

In May 2026, Slovan Bratislava secured an eighth consecutive Slovak league title with two rounds remaining. The Niké Liga attracts football followers, but ice hockey is also central to Slovak sporting culture.

For smaller domestic fixtures, compare whether markets are actually offered and read the rules on postponed games and settlement after overtime. A large total number of football events says little about coverage of Slovak sport.

Player controls with national reach

Online gambling is restricted to adults aged 18 or over. Licensed platforms must verify identity, show gambling-risk information and provide limits on stakes or losses. Slovakia also operates the Register of Excluded Persons (RVO). A voluntarily excluded person can request removal only after more than six months.
