Overview

In April 2026, South Africa's National Gambling Board launched a public register to help people distinguish licensed operators from illegal betting websites. That matters more than a familiar logo or a large welcome bonus: a sportsbook may be accessible from Johannesburg without holding the provincial permission required to serve South African customers.

The country has a substantial legal sports-betting market. Online casino gambling, however, is treated differently. Mixing the two is one of the easiest ways to misunderstand South African betting rules.

One country, provincial licences

Sports betting and horse-racing wagers may be offered online by bookmakers licensed through South Africa's provincial gambling authorities. The National Gambling Board (NGB) oversees compliance nationally, but it does not issue a single licence covering every sportsbook.

An operator might be authorised by the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board or another provincial regulator. The licence should appear on its website, with details that can be checked against official records.

The NGB's Verified Operators portal, launched on 8 April 2026 and updated in September, gives players another way to check legal operators. Look for the licensed company, province, licence number and relevant website — not just the brand name.

Permission to take online sports bets does not amount to permission to run an online casino. International licences alone do not replace South African authorisation.

A 20% tax made headlines. Was it introduced?

Not as of October 2026.

In November 2025, National Treasury proposed an additional 20% national tax on gross gambling revenue from online gambling. The consultation period closed on 27 February 2026, but SARS confirmed that the measure remained a proposal, with no commencement date announced.

Gross gambling revenue is the operator's revenue after paying winnings, not the amount a player withdraws. Headlines about a "20% betting tax" can therefore be misleading.

The scale of the debate is considerable. Treasury put South African gambling revenue at R74.5 billion for 2024/25, with sports-betting revenue having grown sharply over the preceding five years.

Rand withdrawals are the real payment test

South African betting accounts commonly display balances in rand (ZAR). Bank transfers, instant EFT services and card payments are among the available options, but withdrawal conditions differ between operators.

Before depositing, check whether the receiving bank account must match the player's registered name, what identification documents are required and whether promotional winnings can actually be withdrawn.

KYC (Know Your Customer identity verification) matters here. A quick deposit does not guarantee an equally quick withdrawal, especially when identity checks remain incomplete.

A domestic league worth checking

The 2025/26 Premiership ended with Orlando Pirates taking the title by a single point over Mamelodi Sundowns, ending a 14-year wait. The 2026/27 season began on 1 August 2026.

That makes the local football league, alongside rugby and cricket, a useful test of a sportsbook's actual coverage.

Does it offer clear settlement rules for postponed fixtures, cup qualification and bets decided after 90 minutes? A catalogue filled with European football is not necessarily the best fit for South African supporters.

FAQ

Questions about betting in South Africa

Are online betting sites legal in South Africa?

Yes, for sports and horse racing when the bookmaker holds the required South African provincial authorisation. Online casino gambling is not covered by that exception.

What is the minimum age for betting?

Eighteen. Licensed operators must display their licensing details and follow applicable customer-verification requirements.

Can offshore bookmakers accept South African players?

Website access does not establish legality. Check the NGB register and the relevant provincial authority before treating an international site as a licensed South African bookmaker.
